    The Department of Psychology at James Madison University offers the BS and BA degree in General Psychology, a program of study with a curricular focus on the science of Psychology. Our curriculum offers numerous opportunities for employment in the private and public sector as well as a pathway to professional schools and graduate study in a wide range of programs (e.g., psychological sciences, clinical psychology, social work, counseling, medicine, law, optometry, pharmacy, nursing). The Department of Psychology is a growing department with a dynamic vision for learning at a nationally and internationally prominent institution which has recently transitioned to R2 status and is engaging in a comprehensive plan to address diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    We invite applications for a non-renewable term assistant professor in a 10-month appointment beginning Fall 2023.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is a one-year teaching position. Teaching responsibility will include some combination of: courses that meet our sociocultural requirement; Abnormal, Counseling, and/or Clinical Psychology; General Education courses (Introduction to Psychology and/or Lifespan Human Development); methodology courses; and/or upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise/specialty. The area of specialty is open. Successful candidates will be welcome to participate in scholarly activities and service, although these are not expectations of the position.

    Qualifications

    Candidates must have a PhD or PsyD in any area of psychology from an APA-accredited program appropriate to the courses they will be teaching. Teaching experience is preferred.

    Candidates must possess a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Candidates must also demonstrate an appreciation for the preparation of undergraduate students for employment, graduate education (e.g., counseling, clinical psychology, neuroscience, and other research psychology disciplines) or professional programs (e.g., optometry, physician assistant, occupational therapy, physical therapy).

    The Department of Psychology invites applications for a One-year, Full-Time, Temporary position in School Psychology to begin August 10th 2023. At minimum, candidates should have an Ed.S from an approved/accredited program in School Psychology. Rank is at the Assistant Professor level with Ph.D. or Instructor with Ed.S. Candidates should be prepared to: 1) teach

    graduate courses in our NASP-approved school psychology program as well as serving as a mentor to graduate students in a program that is committed to training students in ecological-oriented, comprehensive service delivery and 2) teach undergraduate courses within the

    psychology department such as Lifespan Development, Child Psychology, Learning, Statistics, Research Methods, or other electives as well as mentoring undergraduate students.


    Preferred qualifications include: 1) currently licensed or eligible to be licensed through a State Dept. of Education for School Psychology and/or Board of Psychology as a School Psychologist and 2) 2-3 years of experience working in the schools.


    The Psychology Department offers a large bachelor’s program; a master’s with options in Experimental and Industrial-Organizational Psychology; and a Doctor of Psychology in Counseling. The psychology faculty is committed to providing a supportive and collaborative environment for building a successful career.

    Stafford County Public Schools has 3 openings for Master’s +/Specialist or Doctoral level school psychology interns for the SY2023-24.  Successful applicants will join a team of 17 school psychologists, and 31 educational diagnosticians in a mid-sized suburban district in northern Virginia.  The internship program in SCPS has been successfully providing the culminating supervised training experience for interns for over 12 years.  Although we are not an APPIC site, pre-doctoral and post-doctoral clinical supervision is available for doctoral-level interns.  Interns receive a stipend of $20,000 and benefits, work a 10-month schedule of 7.5 hour days, participate in all professional development activities alongside licensed staff, have opportunities to attend funded conferences, and have the benefit of a cohort experience with other interns.

    General Statement of Duties

    Provides psycho-educational support for students who attend a particular school location which is to be determined. Provides direct service to students who have academic and social difficulties in the traditional school setting, as well as direct service to students who struggle with significant behavioral, emotional, and/or mental health issues. Incumbent works collaboratively with building administration, school staff, and assigned school social worker to meet the social-emotional and academic needs of students. Familiarity with education law and special education regulations preferred.  Knowledge of available community resources preferred.  Flexibility is required to work with diversity of individuals in a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes.  Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. 

    Essential Duties

    • Serves on various school-based student assistance committees
    • Provides school faculty training on positive behavior supports; warning signs for students at-risk for serious emotional behavior
    • Conducts functional behavior assessments
    • Provides group counseling targeting behavioral intervention strategies
    • Serves on school safety and crisis team
    • Conducts assessments of students experiencing academic and social adjustment problems in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations for exceptional education services.
    • Complete psycho-educational evaluations and other assessments in compliance with mandated timelines.
    • Collaborates with teachers, school social worker, administrators, and other school personnel to provide research-based strategies, intervention and progress monitoring to address academic and behavioral needs of students.
    • Performs structured observations of students in the school setting to resolve problems with learning and/or behavior.
    • Consults with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to help them better understand and work with individual behavior.
    • Develops and implements targeted behavior strategies/interventions to support student emotional needs and improve behavior and academic achievement.

    • Completes student risk assessments.
    • Serves as member or school-based student assistance teams; special education eligibility committees and on school safety and crisis intervention teams. 
    • Provides individual and/or group counseling for students including anger management and crisis intervention services that include grief counseling and debriefing for students and school staff.
    • Creates individual treatment plans.
    • Provides case management services to implement a comprehensive student service plan at school, home, and in the community.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Extensive knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development, both normal and abnormal, and of curriculum and instructional practices including behavior management are required.  Must be knowledgeable and abide by the ethical standards of NASP. Highly developed counseling skills for crisis and non-crisis situations and a broad background in psychological/educational testing, test interpretation, and application to behavioral and instructional strategies are also required.  Strong communication skills, both written and oral, to meet the diverse needs of our school community.  Skills in managing time and appropriate resources.

    Must hold or be eligible for a valid license issued by the Department of Education with an endorsement in school psychology. 

    School psychologists must meet requirements established by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) for administration of tests.

    231 day - $58,453.81

    239 day - $60,478.19

    260 day - $65,792.17
