TOPICS: Applied Uses of Generative AI for School Psychology
Workshop Description: This interactive presentation and workshop aims to provide acomprehensive exploration of the practical applications of generative AI technology. It caters to both individuals with some exposure to AI and those seeking a deeper understanding of this technology. Participants will delve into the workings of advanced AI systems like Sophia, the AI Robot, and ChatGPT, and their potential to revolutionize approaches to work.
The workshop will cover the fundamental concepts of generative AI, delving into its capabilities and limitations. It will also address ethical considerations and explore real-world applications of generative AI in academic and behavioral interventions, counseling, and classroom support. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how generative AI can enhance their work and address various challenges.
Learning Objectives:
1. Gain foundational AI knowledge: An introductory understanding of Artificial Intelligence and how it is revolutionizing many aspects of our lives.
Insights into the development and operation of AI models, including data collection, processing, and the nature of AI-driven responses and interactions.
2. Identify AI Applications and Limitations: Discuss what AI tools excel at, where they fall short, and how to effectively integrate them into practice.

Presenter: Teresa Ristow, an Assistant Professor of Industrial/Organizational
Psychology at Radford University, obtained her Ph.D. in I-O Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2023. Her research is centered around utilizing natural language processing and computational methodologies in personnel selection and recruitment, aiming to reduce bias in machine learning methodologies. Teresa has not only presented but also conducted multiple workshops at annual conferences, exploring the integration of AI into the workplace. The TOAD (Technology in Organizational and Applied Disciplines) lab, actively maintained by Teresa at Radford University, aims to engage students in applied research endeavors, providing them with effective I-O career skills. Furthermore, she places great emphasis on teaching, incorporating AI and associated technology into the classroom, and sharing knowledge about the effective use of such tools.
The Ziggurat Model: Providing a Framework for Designing Comprehensive Strategies and Supports for Students with Autism
Workshop Description: Join Virginia Tech's Training and Technical Assistance Center (VT T/TAC) as they discuss the Ziggurat Model. From the Ziggurat Group's Website, "The Ziggurat Model is a framework designed to meet underlying needs while capitalizing on strengths.
For more than 15 years, the Ziggurat Model has been helping autistic individuals, parents, teachers, and professionals to navigate autism. It’s a complete system equipped with strategies and support, designed to make a complicated subject simple.
There’s no doubt that you’ve found plenty of research about autism. But have you found an effective plan with interventions specific to the autistic person you’re working with?"
VT T/TAC Staff will discuss the basics of the Ziggurat Model and how school
psychologists could utilize it in their FBA practices and beyond.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to:
● Understand the framework of the Ziggurat Model and how it was developed.
● Understand how the information provided by the Ziggurat assessment could
be used by FBA/BIP teams.
● Comprehend the skill areas and levels assessed using the Ziggurat.
● Utilize resources to help IEP and RtI teams develop specific plans for
addressing individual strengths and weaknesses.
Presenters: Staff from Virginia Tech Training and Technical Assistance Center
(VT-TTAC). The mission of the Training & Technical Assistance Center (T/TAC) is to improve educational opportunities and contribute to the success of children and youth with disabilities (birth–22 years). This mission is two-fold; first, to increase the capacity of schools, school personnel, service providers, and families to meet the needs of children and youth with disabilities and, second, to foster the state improvement goals for personnel development, which address improving the performance of children and youth with disabilities, by enhancing the knowledge, skills, abilities, and performance of all personnel who work with them.

VASP is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists to
offer professional development for psychologists. VASP maintains
responsibility for the program. 5.5 NASP CPD credits will be awarded to
participants who attend this workshop in its entirety. Credits may also be
used for recertification by the Virginia Department of Education if
approved by the attendees' school division. This training is directly
related to the scope of practice of clinical psychology and is considered
eligible for Virginia Board of Psychology CE credit under
18VAC125-20-122 and § 54.1-3606.1
*Inclement weather: Participants will be notified via email if the
workshops are postponed or are canceled due to inclement weather.
*Refunds will be offered if participants are unable to attend the
workshop.
